WESSEX GROUP

Group Notes

13 May 2010

by Ken Blowe

Julian Jenkinson was guest speaker at the Prize Presentation lunch in February and before he gave a thought provoking insight on his long involvement with triathlons starting with local & national events in England & going on to international races in many other countries he was presented with our own T I Raleigh trophy for fastest veteran (51.23 with Paul Jones, Bournemouth Jubilee) in the Grand Priz des Gents 25 miles last year as well as the South DC CTT BAR Cup for 2009.

John Woodburn did not compete in any of our Championships last year and only won one trophy for biggest plus 27.18 on our local courses in Open events at 25 miles with Dave England (50 miles champion & Ray Price Trophy winner in that same event).
Roy Fairchild (Bob Kemp Memorial Trophy in the August 25 miles as well as Team awards for Bognor Regis CC in that event and in the 50 miles Championship, Alan Sharpen (Team awards in both 10 & 25 miles), Norman Harvey (winner of Ray Price Trophy for 'Supervets' over 70?s) also collected their trophies on the day as did Nik Bowdler the Men?s BAR winner.
The awards won by Terry Icke (10 & 25 miles Champion, Short Distance BAR & D H Jack Trophy) and Lesley Walkling (Ladies BAR) were handed over to them subsequently.

A dozen group members out of a small field of 36 riders only entered the Andover Wheelers 25 miles event (which incorporated the 2010 Group Championship) held on 9th May.
Strong N to NE winds in the previous week had not dropped making conditions extremely hard for fast times on a morning which also had a smattering of drizzle throughout with wetter roads at the far end of the course at Basingstoke.
As a result times generally were very much slower than expected with only half a dozen rides inside the hour.
Nevertheless Julian Jenkinson was fastest overall as well as third Fastest on Standard (+ 13.34) and his time of 53.26 was some 3 ½ minutes faster than the 2nd placed rider (Gary Allen of GA Cycles 56.57).
Simon Healey of the promoting club was forty seconds slower in 3rd place (57.37 and Terry Icke fourth (58.03).
Terry's plus of 22.02 meant he became Group Champion with Terry Jefferies (New Forest CC) in second place (+ 15.38) whilst Alan Sharpen, although beaten by Julian by one second for third place, at least had the satisfaction of leading Sotonia CC to the Team Championship.
Louise Burman was fastest lady (1.6.46).
Dave England (Crabwood CC) who had entered the event and would have been in the running for a medal had suffered a slight heart attack during the week and had apologised for not starting.
Happily he is out of hospital and recovering well at home & we wish him all the best for a full recovery.

Amongst many outstanding race results already this season were new Age Group records at 10 & 25 miles by Steve Whitewick at age 49 (19.40 in Hampshire RC event on 2nd May and 51.21 in Farnborough & Camberley CC event on 17th April).
In both these events he was second fastest by one & two seconds respectively (Steve Walkling being in first place over 25 miles with 51.19 ? incidentally he had also won the Alton CC 50 Km held about a fortnight earlier with a time of 1.13.06).
Steve Whitewick?s time at the shorter distance beat four of Mick St Leger records set at ages 43/46 inclusive between 2007 & 2009 whilst the 25 miles time equalled John Woodburn?s time at age 54 set as long ago as 1991.In addition to this he had won both the a3crg ?25? earlier in April with 52.30 (as well as FOS + 18.05) and the Bournemouth Arrow CC ?10?as well as Fastest Veteran (56.13 and 2nd on Target Time + 10.32 to John Woodburn in Series 2 of the 2010 Rudy Project series whose plus was 13.11 in the 25 mile event.
John himself has scored three first places in the Target time out of four rides for the first half of the eight event series this year & looks set to achieve yet another series win.
Dave Pickering (another newcomer to our ranks) won the CC Weymouth ?10? at the end of April after achieving placings in the first four at earlier local open events.

In addition to the above David Shepherd, Eamonn Deanne, Ray Hughes, Glenn Longland , Terry Icke & Julian Jenkinson have figured either in the first half a dozen or achieved FOS awards in events this year.
Finally the first 50 mile race of the year saw Nik Bowdler & Gawie Nienaber finish 3rd & 4th respectively in the Charlotteville event with times of 1.48.14 & 1.49.20 respectively.
If the weather improves who knows how many other people will achieve personal bests as well as new Group and even National Age Records during 2010.

The Group has gained three new members since the last issue namely Simon Hall (Andover Wheelers), Matthew Rowley (Oxonian CC) & David Welling (North Hampshire RC).
